Summary: This policy explains what information Primer collects, how we use it, and your choices when you use the Primer mobile application, website, and related services (the "App").
Educational purposes, not clinical care. Primer is a daily course about how attention, feeling and reaction work. It is not therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for care from a qualified professional. If you are in crisis, contact your local emergency services or a crisis line.
1. Information We Collect
a. Information You Provide
When using Primer, you may provide:
- Account information (such as an email address, if you choose to sign in)
- Focus areas or preferences you select during onboarding
- Course progress, reflections, and notes you create
- Questions or messages you submit to the AI companion
- Subscription and billing details (processed by third-party providers)
- Feedback you choose to send us
You can use Primer without an email address. An account is only needed to carry your progress to another device.
b. Automatically Collected Information
We may automatically collect:
- Device type, operating system, and app version
- App usage activity (features used, session length, curriculum day)
- Crash logs and performance data
- Anonymous analytics data
We do not collect precise location data.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Deliver the daily lesson and track which day you are on
- Generate AI responses when you use the companion
- Maintain your account, progress, and saved reflections
- Improve app performance and reliability
- Enforce usage limits and prevent abuse
- Manage subscriptions and access to paid features
- Communicate important updates
We do not sell your personal data.
3. AI Features and OpenAI
Primer's AI companion is powered by OpenAI (OpenAI, L.L.C., San Francisco, CA). To make these features work, the following is transmitted to OpenAI's API to generate your response:
- Questions or messages you send
- Context you have shared in the app, such as your focus areas, when relevant to personalize the response
- Your current curriculum day or recent lesson, when relevant
OpenAI processes this data solely to generate the requested response. Under OpenAI's API terms, data submitted via the API is not used to train OpenAI's models. You can review OpenAI's privacy policy at https://openai.com/privacy.
AI responses are produced automatically and may be inaccurate or incomplete. They are intended for education and reflection, and are not clinical guidance.
Please avoid entering sensitive personal, legal, medical, or financial information into the App.
4. Rate Limiting
- AI interactions may be subject to daily or monthly rate limits.
- Limits may vary by subscription tier.
- We reserve the right to modify limits at any time.
5. Subscriptions
Primer may offer a paid subscription that unlocks additional features or removes usage limits. Free users may have limited access to certain features.
Payments are processed by third-party providers (such as Apple or Google). We do not store your full payment details.
6. Data Sharing
We share limited data with service providers that help us operate the App:
- Google Firebase (Google LLC) — cloud infrastructure, authentication, and database storage
- OpenAI (OpenAI, L.L.C.) — AI companion responses, as described in Section 3
- SendGrid (Twilio Inc.) — sending verification codes and support replies by email
- Apple App Store / Google Play — payment processing for subscriptions
Each provider is contractually obligated to protect your data and may only use it for the purposes for which it was shared. Only information necessary to operate the App is shared. We never sell your personal data.
7. Data Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data. However, no system is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Data Retention
We retain your information only as long as necessary to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and improve the product.
You may request deletion of your account at any time from within the App or by contacting us. Deleting your account removes your progress and reflections.
9. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or request portability of your personal data, or withdraw consent where applicable.

10. Children's Privacy
Primer is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If we learn we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted within the app and on this page with a revised "Last updated" date.
